I’m Dan, an architect and small structure builder. I’ve worked in the architecture and construction field for about 13 years. The best advice I can give to anyone looking to build a home is to do the research to find a team that is a good fit for you. Design and construction can take a few years and the relationship with your team during this process is similar to a marriage. Personality fit is important, but also look for designers and builders who are experienced working on the types of homes you’re interested in living in. Their stylistic and sustainability goals should align with yours, and they should be able to complement each other through-out the process. This means engaging a builder who can offer constructibility and cost feedback during the design process, and a designer who remains engaged during the construction process to help the home owner navigate finish selections as well as troubleshoot issues that may arise in the field.
